Description

Looking for a taste of working life in an international, future-focused corporate group? Then join us as an intern/master thesis student (m/f/d) and familiarize yourself with our industrial research team for a minimum of 6 months. You will be involved in large-scale projects and perform a defined set of duties independently. Use your time at ABB Corporate Research to build a network and help us develop future-proof technologies.

Key responsibilities
You will contribute to technology scouting activities focused on the electromagnetic design of novel actuators. You will explore alternative design approaches and materials for next-generation actuator topologies.

You will be mainly accountable for:

Conducting a comprehensive literature review to identify state-of-the-art and emerging trends in electromagnetic actuator design.

Investigating alternative actuator topologies and materials, evaluating their potential for given industrial applications.

Developing system-level simulation models that couple finite element analysis (FEA), control and power electronics as well as mechanical loads.

Benchmarking different actuator concepts based on various performance criteria.

Collaborating closely with experienced engineers and researchers to evaluate findings and derive recommendations.

Documentation of the work and presentation to different ABB stakeholders.

Qualifications for the role
You are currently enrolled in a Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related technical field.

You have solid theoretical background in electromagnetics and electrical machines. Familiarity with limited-stroke actuators or magnetic materials is desirable.

You have experience with electromagnetic simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL Multiphysics or FEMM.

You have strong analytical skills and ability to conduct systematic literature and patent research.

You are interested in sustainable technologies and alternative design approaches for electromagnetic devices.

You bring hands-on experience with test setups involving electrical machines or actuators.

Proficiency in English with the ability to convey technical findings effectively in reports and presentations. German is a plus.
