Beschreibung
Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials represent a unique and rapidly growing class of inorganic phosphors with strong potential for advanced sensing applications. In our research group, we have successfully synthesized and characterized several new NIR-emitting phosphor materials with promising optical and thermal properties. For practical use of these phosphors, especially in non-contact temperature sensing, it is essential to understand how their luminescence changes with temperature. The main goal of this Master’s project is therefore to systematically study temperature-dependent luminescence over a broad temperature range (77–900 K) and to develop a photophysical model that links material composition to temperature sensing performance.
A key part of the project will be experimental characterization, including luminescence intensity, spectral shape, and lifetime measurements as a function of temperature. The student will work with modern optical measurement setups and temperature-controlled systems. No prior experience with luminescence is required; training will be provided.
In parallel, the student will develop a simple but physically meaningful photophysical model. This model will describe how temperature influences radiative and non-radiative processes in the phosphors and how these processes depend on chemical composition. The emphasis will be on understanding trends and performance metrics rather than complex chemistry.
This Master’s project offers an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in sensors, photonics, and thermal systems, and who want to work at the interface of engineering and advanced functional materials.
